As you may or may not know, we have a 20 window of time between art and music class. Usually, we spend this time reading in the cafeteria. Today we went outside instead and had a walking lesson. We reviewed non fiction text features, finger stretched words, and went through the kinds of sentences and paragraphs that will make up our animal reports. It was super nice to go outside and get our wiggles out while still learning.

We are very excited to watch these cabbage plants grow! If you need more information or tips on growing your cabbage plant please visit bonniecabbageprogram.com. At the end of the 10 week period I will send an email or notification in the newsletter to send in a picture of the cabbage plant and third grader!
Happy growing! Last Thursday in Science, we thought of problems we have in the classroom and came up with different inventions to solve those problems. Some examples included: a tool to push in chairs, a tool to clean up trash, a pencil holder that hooks on to the chair, and a portable pencil holder belt. They had a lot of fun trying to invent something that could actually do the job.
We have started a nonfiction unit with the start of March. We will study nonfiction text and will research different animals to write a nonfiction piece of our own. I am really excited because this unit matches up perfectly with a scratch art projects the students will be doing in Art. Students will be creating a scratch art piece with Mrs. Hoffert and will be researching that animal.
On Thursday, we took a trip to the library to dust off the encyclopedias. Many students had not even seen these before and were very intrigued. I told them that one day they would be able to tell their children and grandchildren what an encyclopedia is. They couldn't believe that this is what we used instead of the internet to do projects in the past. Students will check out a book on Monday about their animal and will also use 3 websites to do research. We should be experts about an animal and PARAGRAPH WRITING at the end of this unit. You have probably seen our different versions of the 3 Little Pigs coming home. We worked really hard on these and spent a lot of time on them. We drafted, edited, revised, typed and illustrated these so we certainly had to show off our hard work. We met with our 1st grade buddies in Mrs. Burroughs' room and shared our stories with them. I almost teared up seeing the kiddos enthusiastically sharing their stories with their buddies.
If you would like to read our stories and/or write a review please visit this website: https://sites.google.com/a/kingslocal.net/2015-16-book-reviews/home This Thinking Thursday was super beneficial for Mrs. Wey! Students had to design a sturdy back scratcher. They had a ton of fun and solved an important problem.
I apologize that we have been MIA since the end of January! We have been such busy bees that I completely forgot to update the blog! So I am going to put up about 4 in a row. Please take some time to look at them. There are some great pictures that I didn't want for you all to miss out on.
On Valentine's Day we met with our 1st grade buddies to create marshmallow launchers. Students had to think about how they were going to get the heart targets with the marshmallows. They were able to use spoons, craft sticks, clothespins, and rubber bands. We even gave them ONE opportunity to launch marshmallows at their teachers. Check out the pictures below. I think we might have a cupid on our hands! :) Our STEAM Challenge for the week was to design a working jump rope using only plastic bags and duct tape. Without my prompting, they applied what they learned in Science: a solid moves through the air faster than a gas, so they squeezed as much air as they could out of the bags. Also, adding weight to different areas of their jump ropes using duct tape helped to make the jump rope move in an arc. It was amazing to hear all of the conversations happening around the room! In case you were wondering some of the students made it to 25 doctors to fix Cinderella. ;)
I have heard a lot of people say that it is beneficial to use shaving cream to clean desks, but I felt like all we did is make a mess! It was still a lot of fun and students really enjoyed getting to practice words in cursive. Learning how to connect letters to make words is a challenge and we have spent a lot of time working on this. We will certainly be doing it again!
Can your boat float? Can it hold a rock and a little piggy? These are just a few of the questions that our engineers had to ask themselves last Thursday.
