Our STEAM Challenge for the week was to design a working jump rope using only plastic bags and duct tape. Without my prompting, they applied what they learned in Science: a solid moves through the air faster than a gas, so they squeezed as much air as they could out of the bags. Also, adding weight to different areas of their jump ropes using duct tape helped to make the jump rope move in an arc. It was amazing to hear all of the conversations happening around the room! In case you were wondering some of the students made it to 25 doctors to fix Cinderella. ;)
I have heard a lot of people say that it is beneficial to use shaving cream to clean desks, but I felt like all we did is make a mess! It was still a lot of fun and students really enjoyed getting to practice words in cursive. Learning how to connect letters to make words is a challenge and we have spent a lot of time working on this. We will certainly be doing it again!
Can your boat float? Can it hold a rock and a little piggy? These are just a few of the questions that our engineers had to ask themselves last Thursday.
WOW! I have been absolutely blown away by these problem solving 3rd graders!!! Our STEAM challenge this week was to design and build something using 15 sheets of paper and 1 foot of tape that is taller than a chair.
Today we played a game using familiar prefixes and suffixes. (Students have played a game called "I have, who has" for the past 2 weeks with these affixes.) Each student received a sticker with a different part and they had to figure out which affix was on their forehead. For example, for micro- I heard "this is a prefix." "It means small." "A root word is scope."
Students had a lot of fun and we will certainly be playing this game again sometime soon! Neon Pink and Neon Yellow Science Classes did some work with density today and really enjoyed it. We watched 2 videos that students can try at home. If you try this at home please take a picture and email it to me and I will put it up on the blog! :) Have a great weekend. Turquoise and Lime Green will talk about Density in Science in 4 weeks! Please wait until then to do this experiment. :) Our first Thinking Thursday was a great success. With the new year, we have started STEAM Projects in science which will be every Thursday. STEAM stands for (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Today students had to come up with a plan, problem solve and reflect on how to design a 5 inch structure that held a pencil. They then moved on to heavier things like a cell phone, a notebook and a BINDER! At first, they were upset and frustrated that they couldn't use glue or tape but after some serious thinking, problem solving and failures they came up with some creative ways!
